Tori Spelling's "Mommywood"

Tori Spelling has come a long way since playing the role of "Donna Martin" on "Beverly Hills, 90210" in the 90's. These days, Tori -- an actress, reality TV star, jewelry designer and author of two best-selling books -- is a married mother of two, juggling family, romance and a busy career in the wilds of Hollywood. Her reality show with husband Dean McDermott, son Liam and daughter Stella, "Tori & Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood," is in its fourth season on Oxygen and includes a companion web series called "Mommywood." Tori also designs and markets her own line of fashion jewelry on HSN called the Tori Spelling Collection. Most recently, following the success of her first New York Times best-selling book, "sTori Telling," Tori introduced her follow-up, "Mommywood," about her life as a busy wife and mother in Tinseltown. Despite her celebrity status, the book details how Tori deals with the same relationship and parenting issues as the rest of us!

Check out an excerpt of Tori's entertaining and candid new book, "Mommywood," published by Simon Spotlight Entertainment.

Raising normal kids in Hollywood sometimes feels like an oxymoron. Giving my kids that down-to-earth upbringing I always fantasized about is especially hard for me since I've never lived anywhere else or worked in any other business. I mean, I have a feeling I constructed all those fantasies about a "normal" childhood from seeing "normal" families on TV shows. There is no question my kids will be Hollywood kids. Liam may always prefer the weeklies to Goodnight Moon, and I'm sure I'll pass the fashion bug on to Stella. But with Dean, I will find a balance for them. I know what's most important: time with my kids, time as a family, time to explore the world together, make discoveries, and talk about the lessons we learn. Love shines through everything. No matter how blinding the paparazzi flashbulbs may be, I know that my children will always feel my arms around them, actually or figuratively, and they'll see beyond the superficial interference.

Liam is still a Daddy's boy. For now. A few days ago Dean took Liam and went to get Jack for the day. The boys were together from two p.m. to eight p.m. When they got home I said, "Hi, Monkey! I missed you," but Liam wouldn't even look at me. He just said, "Daddy, Daddy." I got his Goldfish crackers and said I'd open the packet for him. He said, "No! Daddy, Daddy." All week I've been putting him to bed. The first night he had a tantrum, crying, "Daddy, Daddy, my daddy." I spent forty-five minutes talking him through it. I said, "Daddy went night-night. He's sleeping. Now it's time for you to go to sleep. I love you. You're fine. You're safe." I said the same things over and over again. But there wasn't one moment when I felt tired or frustrated. (Thank you, Mimi, for teaching me patience.) Finally, he calmed down and snuggled into bed. I said, "Good night, angel. I love you."

I walked away from Liam's bedroom feeling very proud of myself. When I got to our bedroom Dean said, "That was an ordeal, right?" But no, it hadn't felt like an ordeal. I was happy to spend forty-five minutes making my child feel comfortable and safe. I couldn't imagine having anything better to do with my time. I was confident. It felt natural. I wasn't a new, inexperienced parent anymore. I was a real mother, and it made me happy to see my son growing, to see Liam realizing that he could go to sleep with me instead of Dean. I saw it as a breakthrough. I told Dean, "No, it was fine. We're adjusting a learned behavior. It takes time."

Dean and I are learning to share our parenting, to balance experience and inexperience, and to talk through the hard patches. We don't have to be on the same page every minute. No matter how busy our day is or if we're having a disagreement, we always take moments throughout the day to stop, to hug and kiss, and to tell each other how much we love each other. Dean is really good at initiating that. Our challenge is to balance the newness of our family with our different experiences. But undertaking new adventures with the wisdom and experience that life brings is what it's all about. Dean is my soul mate, and I'm always grateful to be growing a family with him.

Just the other night, Dean went to take Liam up to bed. Liam turned and said, "Mama." My heart. Oh my God! He was in Dean's arms but he wanted me. I took him, trying to be cool. I said to Dean, "Isn't this good?"

And Dean said, "My heart's breaking a little bit right now, but yes, it's good." Halfway up the stairs Liam changed his mind. He reached out for Dean. But for those first five steps he wanted his mama. There's hope for me yet.

There are worse things for my children than a Hollywood childhood. I have some fond memories of my own. I think again about the Christmas snow that my parents famously arranged to have delivered to our backyard so their Los Angeles children would have a white Christmas. I'm definitely doing it. I don't know how much it costs, but even if all I can afford is to spread bags of crushed ice across a sandbox, I'm doing it. The Christmas snow is something Jenny, Mehran, and my other friends have been hearing about for years. The snow wasn't really a family tradition; my parents only did it twice. But that extravagance-the jokes we've made about it over the years-that is a tradition between me and my friends. We'll have a big chuckle over doing it for our children. And I know that over the years we'll create our own traditions-simple traditions, extravagant ones, silly ones, and romantic ones. I look at my children-they're still so small-and feel grateful for the years of memories that we have ahead of us.

I spent so long wanting and trying to change my life. I've accepted and embraced "Tori Spelling," and I'm trying in my work to make the most out of being true to myself. The same goes for me as a mother. My kids may not have a normal life. I may be raising them in Mommywood. But I love them, and no matter if we're appearing on red carpets, getting the neighbors in a tizzy, or being documented in weekly magazines, love is love.

Wanted: Worst Toddler Tantrums EVER!

Let's set the scene: You are out (running errands, in a store, in a restaurant) with your young child and seemingly out of NOWHERE, your kid completely melts down. You know what we're talking about -- the resistant arch in the back, the giant tears, the red face and the wails of pain and anguish that go hand-in-hand with a huge temper tantrum. People stare and shake their heads as you helplessly try to get your child to calm down, but to no avail. Your toddler is mighty unhappy, and they are going to make sure everyone knows it!

Every parent has a horrendous tantrum story, and we want to hear all about it. Share your comments with us below -- if we like your story, it could be included in an upcoming ParentDish feature!

Parents' Most Embarrassing Moments

Every parent has been there: You take your young child out into the world and they do or say something that makes you absolutely cringe. You apologize profusely and remove your child from the situation as quickly as possible -- but you wish you could just disappear. So embarrassing! The inappropriate questions to strangers, the impromptu stripteases in public places, the public potty mishaps, the restaurant horror stories...it's enough to make us cower in shame.

Because one parent's humiliation is another parent's giggle, we wanted to gather together some of the most mortifying parental moments we could find. We asked real parents from both the ParentDish and CafeMom.com communities to share their disgraces...and to our delight, they delivered in spades! Enjoy...

Parents Most Embarrassing Moments

When I was pregnant, my sister explained to her 3½-year-old daughter that the reason my tummy was so big was because there was a baby in there. In the grocery store a few days later, an overweight woman walked by and my niece yells, "Mommy, mommy...how many babies does she have in HER tummy?"

    Getty Images

When my son was about 8 months old at Mommy and Me swimming class, he pulled my bathing suit top down while we were getting into the pool. I was mortified to discover that a daddy who was there with his son got a nice view of me without a top!

    Getty Images

We were at the golf course where Daddy was playing a round. I took my eyes off my son, 3, for a minute to scan the course. When I looked back, he had dropped his shorts and was peeing into the little golf ball cup in the middle of a green! Perfect aim, of course. I grabbed his sisters, loaded them up in the cart, started to back away and he came running. We pulled out of there so fast! I'm sure whoever was up next to golf that hole had an interesting round!

    Photodisc

When my son was 15 months old, he was really into elephants and trumpeting like an elephant while raising his arm like the trunk every time he saw one. We were on a walk one day, and a large woman was walking past us; my son raised his arm and trumpeted like he saw an elephant. I was mortified.

    Getty Images

Both of these things happened on the same trip to the grocery store. My 3-year-old son and I were shopping, and there was an older man with a large stomach in the aisle with us. He started chatting up my son. After about two questions from the man, my son blurted out to me (as if the man wasn't standing RIGHT there), "Mommy, why his belly so big?! He got a baby in there, too?" The man just walked away. A few aisles down, there was another man with no teeth. He was older and his lips were sunken in. Well, my son noticed and said, as loud as he could, "Mommy, why he do this?" and proceeded to suck his lips in around his teeth and "gum" his mouth up and down.

    Getty Images

I was a single mom with my first child. I had been dating a guy for a bit and decided to let him meet my son, who was about 2½ years old at the time. The guy was in the middle of talking to him and my son asked, "Why are your teeth the color of mustard?"

    jupiterimages

We have a new baby on the way, and I was explaining to our 2½-year-old son that babies don't eat food like us, they drink milk from mama. One day at day care, as his provider knelt down to give him his goodbye hugs and kiss, instead of hugging he yanked the top of her shirt down, grabbed her boob, and said, "Baby milk?" All before I could even react! I was absolutely MORTIFIED! I could feel my face turning bright red as I tried to tactfully release his death grip on her shirt.

    jupiterimages

We went to the local Walmart and my 3-year-old son saw this lady with a rather large butt. He walks over to her, puts his finger right in her butt crack and says, "Big butt!"

    jupiterimages

I have three grown children who have embarrassed me many times. The most memorable was my son when he was 5 years old. He fell straddle on a steamer trunk (the metal kind) and sustained an injury to his penis. When the swelling went down, the doctors felt he needed a partial circumcision. At the grocery store about four days later, a little old lady came up to us in the produce aisle commenting on how cute my son and newborn daughter were and my son says, "I have an owie on my horsie, want to see?" At this point, he had began calling his penis a horse, no idea where he got that from! Anyway, he proceeded to whip down his pants to show her. I thought that poor old lady was going to faint.

    Getty Images

We were on line at Costco, waiting forever to get checked out when my 3-year-old daughter (with horror in her eyes) shouted, "MOM, look at that scary man!" So I turn around...and it was an extremely unattractive LADY! I didn't know where to go, because I was surrounded by people and it's not easy moving around once you are on line. Meanwhile, my daughter didn't stop -- "MOMMY, it's not Halloween, why is that man so scary!?" The woman was shocked. I finally shut my daughter up by opening an unpaid-for bag of chips, which she started munching on.

Study Finds Television Noise Delays Development

Study connects delayed brain development to television. Image: sxc.hu

In the past, studies have shown that infants exposed to television tend to have delayed vocalization and attentional problems. While various theories were offered up to explain this phenomenon, there had been no in-depth studies to back them up. Until now. A new study led by Dimitri A. Christakis, director of the Center for Child Health, Behavior and Development at Seattle Children's Research Institute, finds that the answer lies not only in the child's experience with the television, but the impact of television on the adults around him as well.

The study looked at over 300 children aged two months to four years old. The children were fitted with business-card sized sound recorders that captured everything they said and heard during continuous 12 to 16 hour periods. These recordings took place on random days for up to two years and were interrupted only for naps, baths, nighttime sleep and car rides. Special software was used to process the recordings and analyze the sounds children were exposed to as well as the sounds they made.

The researchers found that for each hour of audible television, there was a significant drop in the amount and duration of child vocalizations as well as a drop in conversational interactions with an adult. By "significant" they mean that, on average, every hour of television exposure was associated with a decrease of 770 words the child heard from an adult. And it's not that the children were just tuning out -- the adults were speaking 500 to 1,000 fewer words per hour of audible television.

Should Babies Take Swimming Lessons?

girl in swimming pool

Swimming lessons alone won't keep your child safe around water. Image: sxc.hu

Most of us, whether we live near the water or not, want our children to learn to swim as early as possible. Not being able to swim is a safety concern and a valid one at that. But how early is too early to start the lessons? Judging by the readers at Cafe Mom, there is no such thing too early.

"My DD is 9 months old and we started swim classes 2 weeks ago and absolutely love it...something that WE can do together. They do fun songs, put their faces under water and she does just great! I'm so glad we are doing them."

There are water programs available for babies as young as several months and many parents are signing their kids up. But despite the growing popularity of infant swim lessons, there is a persistent belief that children who take swimming lessons at a young age are actually more likely to drown than those who don't.

Is 'Princess Parenting' Really a Problem?

Is your daughter on a princess pedestal? Image: amazon.com

Almost from the moment they are born, little girls today are bombarded with princess paraphernalia. Crib sheets, bottles, bibs and blankets all come in pink girly-girl versions and often feature words like "her highness" and images of royal beauties. It only gets worse as they get older. What parent of a toddler girl doesn't have at least one princess dress-up outfit complete with sparkly plastic shoes and a tiara?

Most of us see the princess phenomenon as harmless fantasy play. But there are some who believe that parents who allow their daughters to enjoy this frilly pink pretend world are in danger of raising narcissistic little divas who expect the world to revolve around them.

One such person is Jean Twenge, an associate professor of psychology at San Diego State and co-author of "The Narcissism Epidemic: Living in the Age of Entitlement." In researching the way parenting affects children, she determined that the the current princess obsession that so many little girls - and their parents - have bought into can lead to problems.

Siberian Girl Literally Raised By Cats and Dogs

Siberia, where a 5-year-old girl that could only speak in

A 5-year-old girl in Siberia was being raised by cats and dogs, according to police. Image: wikitravel.org

Next time you tell your kids that they're acting like they were raised by wolves, you may want to reconsider that statement.

A 5-year-old Russian girl was found in "a squalid flat in the Siberian city of Chita," according to the BBC. And while "squalid flat" might describe the first few apartments I lived in after college, they were still way better than what this poor little girl was subjected to.

According to police reports, the girl had never been outside and had been "'brought up' by several dogs and cats." She behaves like those animals, barking "like a little dog" and "[jumping] at the door" when people leave the room.

She communicates using what police are calling "animal language only," although she did seem able to understand Russian.

You know all of those nature vs. nurture debates we love to have? Clearly environment matters.

So where are the parents? Police have no idea where the father is, but they are questioning the mother.

Not to make light of a terrible situation -- but what exactly will they ask? "Why is your daughter barking at us?" I think it's safe to say that if the mother had any idea of what was going on, she's several steps below Dina Lohan on the "Mom of the Year" list.

We've had our share of bad parenting stories in the United States recently -- the woman whose son weighs 555 pounds, or Jon and Kate Gosselin. But this is a whole new level of awful.

Hopefully the little girl will be OK. What a horrible story.

The Dangers of Pet Doors

Make sure Fido is the only one using your pet door. Image: sxc.hu

Pet doors that let your animals come and go as they please please may be handy little inventions, but I've never had one. While I can appreciate the convenience of not having to repeatedly open and close the back door at the whim of a fickle cat, the benefits are canceled out by the possibility, however slim, that some non-domesticated creature may make use of that door as well.

Visions of rabid raccoons tearing through my house have prevented me from ever having a pet door, but there is an even better reason to think twice about installing one: Child safety. According to new research, more than 100 children have died or been seriously injured in the past ten years after squeezing through pet doors and ending up outside alone.

When Carole Rafone's 2-year-old son Matthew got out of the house via a pet door, he made his way straight to the backyard swimming pool where he drowned. She is now suing the manufacturer of PetSafe doors because she believes that they had an obligation to warn parents of this danger on their product packaging and instructions.

As parents, we want to protect our kids, be accountable and set a good example as often as possible. But hey, we are also human! So sometimes, we have to just let things slide and perhaps act less responsibly than we should in order to preserve our sanity. In the spirit of sharing our shortcomings, CafeMom.com has created a place where parents can admit their parenting weaknesses anonymously, appropriately called Mom Confessions. Check out what some parents in CafeMom's community divulged -- are you guilty of any of these parental offenses?

It was challenging and fun -- and my mother never shadowed me to prevent a fall or little mishaps. This is how children learn -- by making mistakes. Some Baby Foods are Junk Says Consumer Group

Babies love cookies, but are they a healthy choice?. Image: sxc.hu

Some baby foods might be as fatty as a cheeseburger, a British consumer group recently found, or contain as much sugar as a cookie. The Children's Food Campaign surveyed more than 100 different baby and toddler foods available in mainstream British supermarkets and found surprisingly high levels of saturated fat, sugar and salt.

Some even contained notorious trans fats, but were improperly labeled. "The results of this survey are staggering," says CFC coordinator Christine Haigh, "Many foods marketed for babies and young children are often advertised as "healthy". In reality, in terms of sugar and saturated fat content, some are worse than junk food. In particular, failing to correctly label products that contain dangerous trans fats is outrageous."

In the beginning, baby food is pretty straightforward. It's hard to mess up smashed peas, after all. But once babies and toddlers move up to chunkier textures, processed foods step in. That's when parents need to start really paying attention to food labels.

What to Watch Out For in Public Bathrooms

Public restrooms can be scary places. They smell funny, their cleanliness is never predictable and germy danger seems to lurk in every (damp and creepy) crack and crevice. Parents of toddlers have an even greater challenge, since small children are not only just learning to use the toilet, but they also love to touch whatever they can get their little hands on. Public restrooms are so notorious, they've inspired websites like The Bathroom Diaries, a tribute to the world's best and worst public bathrooms. (The best is in New Zealand. China's squat toilets rank as the worst.) So is all this anxiety appropriate? Or is it just public paranoia? For the poop (sorry) on public potties, read on.

What to Watch Out For in Public Bathrooms

What kind of bacteria can be found on a toilet seat? The gang's all here: Streptococcus, staphylococcus, E. coli, hepatitis A virus and the common cold virus are regulars in a public bathroom. Yikes! Now here's the good news -- for most people, a healthy immune system and a good hand washing can handle any of these bugs who do manage to immigrate from toilet to person. Read on for more scary stats and tips for staying healthy in a public restroom.

Toilet Seats: Cover Them or Squat?
Before you hover or, worse, wrestle with one of those impossible toilet seat covers, hear this: It's all but impossible to catch a disease from a toilet seat, says Columbia University. All that paper cover does is put a mental barrier between you and the seat. In fact, hovering can actually lead to urinary tract infections, if you don't empty your bladder all the way. That said, if the seat is visibly soiled, wipe it down or choose another stall.

    But What About the Children?
Just like moms don't need to hover over the seat, neither do kids (at least those with healthy immune systems). But little ones have trouble perching on those grown-up sized thrones. Either hold your tot so they don't have to grip the seat with their hands, or make sure they get a really good scrubbing at the sink when they're done.

    The Great Flushing Controversy
Health experts recommend that you use your shoe to flush. Not because of the nasties that live on the handle, mind you, but because everyone else is probably doing it anyway. Toilet handle plus bottom-of-the-shoe germs equals EWWW. But blogger Julie of A Little Pregnant once threatened violence to anyone she caught using this technique, so you'll have to decide which is riskier -- exposure to those germs? Or one mad mama?

    When Toilets Attack
Unpredictable and loud, automatic toilets might be cleaner, but they scare many newly trained toddlers right out of the bathroom. Reassure your child, but if the going gets tough, here's a tip: Carry a pack of Post-It's in your bag to cover the sensor while your tot takes care of business.

    Damon Dahlen, AOL

    Oh Baby!
Many public restroom changing stations feature a disposable cover dispenser to keep baby away from germs. As most parents know, that dispenser is almost always empty. Instead, plan ahead and carry your own changing pad. In a pinch, a blanket will do, too. Keep baby's hands busy with one of her own toys, then be sure to wash your own hands when you're through.

    Handwashing 101
Teach kids the right way to scrub for cleaner hands: Using soap and warm water, lather up and scrub hands (back and front), in between fingers and under fingernails for at least 20 seconds, or as long as it takes kids to sing the ABCs. Rinse well, dry, then use that same towel to turn the faucet off.

    jupiterimages

    Stuck Without Soap
Hand sanitizers are a life saver for busy parents and other people on the go, but do they really work? According to Mayo Clinic, yes, as long as they are alcohol-based hand sanitizers. Look for a product with at least 60 percent alcohol, and use enough product to cover your hands, front and back. In a pinch, it's just as good as hand washing.

    Damon Dahlen, AOL

    Think Outside the Throne
Think the toilet is the germiest thing in a public restroom? Think again. The floor usually ranks as the dirtiest, followed by the sanitary napkin receptacle. Sink faucets and towel holders are major culprits too; both are nice, damp breeding ground for germs. Teach little ones not to touch while they wait for you to go potty, and if you can't find an automatic sink, use the towel that you dried your hands with to turn the water off.

    Dirty Little Secrets
Everyone has a dirty little secret, but here's one that's filthier than most: Though we all claim to wash our hands after we use the bathroom, ASM's Clean Hands Campaign discovered that only 77 percent of us -- on average -- actually do. At a Braves Game in Atlanta or Grand Central Station in NYC? Keep your hands to yourself; a high percentage of people in those locations were observed leaving the bathroom without washing.

Missing Three Year Old Found Alive After Two Days

Here's a nice story for you.

Three year old Joshua Childers wandered away from his house at 11:30 am Monday morning. Mom was taking a nap, dad was on the phone. The parents of course panicked when they couldn't find their son. Turns out Joshua had wandered into Mark Twain Forest in Madison County, Missouri. Despite the friendly name, the forest is pretty treacherous. Bears. Mountain lions. Snakes. (Oh my.) Frankly, no matter what the terrain is like, he's a little kid. So him being lost for more than a few seconds would be enough to send me looking for a Valium. Or four.

Luckily, Joshua was fine. Searcher Donnie Halpin found him. Well, first he found his butt. Donnie told CBS' Early Show: "I could just see the little part of his little butt sticking up there, and I took a couple more steps, and I could see his legs. I thought the worst at first. I said, 'Hey, buddy,' And that little feller just sit right up, gets a little smile on his face and I asked him, 'Do you want to go home?'" He did. I mean, hey. Clearly the kid is pretty tough and may be the future host of Survivorman. But he's still only three years old.
